Were they talking about coffee? Coffee without cream or milk is black. For example,

    Pat: Do you want coffee?
    Sam: Sure. Make mine black.

My understanding of root beer is a brownish beer with NO ALCOHOL.

Some may say otherwise and they're probably correct if they do, because Mug and A&E Root Beer are all I've tried of root beers.

As for ordering coffee, I'd usually go like this: "Can I get a double-cupped medium black, please?"
Double-cupped because otherwise it'd be too hot in my hand, and medium for the size. Then you say the kind of coffee you want, be it black, double-double, french vanilla, irish cream or whatnot.

"Root Beer" is a flavor of a soda, a carbonated drink, a pop... a drink like Coca-Cola, with bubbles, but with a different flavor. It used to be made with a flavor called sassafras, and sassparilla... invented in the mid-1800īs.

It does not have alcohol and is not a type of beer.

It tastes very good; you should try it if you get the chance. Coca-cola and Pepsi have become much more popular than Root Beer, though.

PS--An excellent way of finding out where an English speaker comes from is to ask them what they call a Coca-cola type drink... a soda, a pop, a coke, etc... there are a dozen different names and most areas use one name more than others...

In the American middle, where I live, we call them all 'cokes'... even if we really mean a Pepsi, or a Dr.Pepper, or a Root Beer, Fanta, whatever...

Boy #1: "Are you guys thirsty for some cokes?"
Boy #2: "Yeah! Let's go buy some cokes. I want a Diet Pepsi."
Boy #3: "Me too.. cokes sound good right now... I'll have a Coke."
Boy #4: "Not me, I have been drinking Fantas all day, I'm tired of cokes. I'll have a lemonade."

    Wink Re: Root Beer

    hello:
    root beer
Root beer is a beverage made from a combination of vanilla, cherry tree bark, licorice root, sarsaparilla root, sassafras root bark, nutmeg, anise, and molasses among other things. Each root beer has a unique recipe. Root beer constitutes about 3% of the American soft drink market. Many local brands of root beer exist and home-made root beer is made from concentrate or (rarely) from roots.

    best wishes
