    Default whenever+would possible?

"He played ball whenever he would come to the basketball court."

Can we use "would" after ''whenever" to talk about past events?

I suppose there is nothing wrong with it grammatically but it's not very natural. it would be much more natural to say "He played ball whenever he came..." or even "He would play ball whenever he came..."
