    thanks a lot / thanks

    thanks

    1) Is it not polite enough?

    2) Shall I say thank you instead?

    3) Is it too causal for a staff in saying it to the boss?

    thanks a lot

It is polite enough for most situations (friends, family) but thank you is more polite when dealing with strangers/coworkers/boss.

    2) Shall I say thank you instead?
When in doubt, use thank you.

    3) Is it too causal for a staff in saying it to the boss?
It depends on your relationship to your boss and if you work in a very casual environment. Thank you would be more appropriate.

    thanks a lot

Thank you very much would be more polite when speaking to your boss, a stranger, or somebody older than you (grandparents, etc).

    Thank you.
