    Two simple questions

    Hi,

Samuel Johnson was so vexed by a young clergyman's nescience that he complained, "His ignorance is so great, I am afraid to show him the bottom of it."

    1.
What does the "he" mean in the sentence? The young clergyman?

    2.
What does the bold sentence mean?

    Thanks a lot

    1. What does the "he" mean in the sentence? Johnson.

2.What does the bold sentence mean? I am reluctant to reveal to him how deep (great) it is.
