    Default TO SHAKE OFF

Itīs not easy to shake off smoking.
Is it possible to say to shake somebody off, meaning to get rid of?

You can "shake somebody off", "The police were following me, but I managed to shake them off", but I wouldn't use "Itīs not easy to shake off smoking".

This - though the pursuer doesn't have to be the police - is called 'shaking off a tail'.
