How is it used?

It could have a religious meaning or a gourmet food meaning, among others.

Without getting into too much religion....

Christian religions usually have a ritual during worship services in which bread and wine are consumed. You can read more about "Communion" online if it interests you. Different religions will have different symbols or explanations for things.
