    Default tense, infinitive

    Dear teachers,

    I have four questions:

    No.1

For the first time in his life, she _____ a sense of fulfillment.
    a. felt b. has felt

The key is "a", no problem. Could you please explain why "b" isn't correct?

    No.2
He was said to be the first man___ around the world in a hot air balloon.
    a. to travel b, traveling

The key is "a", no problem. Could you please explain why "b" isn't correct?

    No.3
Trying to set a good example for his team members, he was always the first one at practice and the last one ______.
    a. to leave b. leaving
The key is "a", no problem. Could you please explain why "b" isn't correct?

    No.4
The first tourist who ______ will get a surprise.
    a. arrives b. will arrive
"a" is correct because this is a sentence that serves as a condition so present tense is used to suggest future tense. Is that right?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Jiang

The first time refers to a specific time in the past, though you could use the present perfect if you were, for instance, giving a commentary at the time of feeling this. (BTW her life would make more sense)

    a. to leave b. leaving

You could look on the first xxxx + infinitive as a colligation.
