    Default the meaning of "self"

    Dear all,

I'd like to know the meaning of "self" in the sentence below.

"...that the closest kind of friendship is only possible with a handful of individuals, because of the investment of time and self that it takes."

It seems to me "self" means somthing like "sincerity" or "endevor" or "effort" or something like that.

Am I on the right track?

    Thank you!

    OP

You were on the right track.

"Self" means something like one's personality, capacity to give, capacity to feel, time, effort...
