    Default meaning?

    "Don't make me promise to do something I was already going to do."

    Why would someone throw in "already? It would be fine without it. Or the speaker meant that he was going to do what he wants anyway?

    It just reinforces the point that he had made the decision to do it anyway, even before the promise was asked for. He's saying that he intends to do it and making him promise would change nothing.
