Default degenerate / escalate / turn

    Hello!

Is there any difference between the following sentences?

The match between the teams degenerated into violence.
The match between the teams escalated into violence.
The match between the teams turned into violence.

    Thanks.

The last one should read 'The match between the teams turned violent'.

    Otherwise they mean the same.

For me, something can only escalate up* a scale. So the bad-tempered behaviour or foul play in a match might escalate into a full-scale punch-up, but not the match itself.

*Some very literal-minded pedants insist that escalation can go either way, but I think that belief is at odds with most (if not all) usage.
