Default The boy (who) I thought was?

Is it possible to omit "who", a subjective relative pronoun in this case? If it is, it sounds weird and confusing.

ex)The boy (who) I thought was very healthy suddenly fell ill.

Yes, it's fine - even preferable - to omit who (or whom).
