    Creating a link

I'm not knowledgeable about computers. (Now that's an understatement.) Can someone tell me how I can include a link in my post to another thread or another source on the Internet, such as a dictionary, newspaper, etc?

When you are on the page you want to link to, highlight the address in the window at the top (this one is http://www.usingenglish.com/forum/support-area/144199-creating-link.html) then either right-click and choose copy or press the Control key and C at the same time to copy it.

You can either paste it directly in, as I have above, or you can highlight a work, and then choose the little symbol that looks like a globe with a chain link under it, and paste the address into the box that opens up. I did that here.

You will want to have both windows open, so you can go back and copy it again if you do something like "cut" text in your post. The cut text will replace whatever you've copied.

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Re: Creating a link

Thanks a lot, Barb. I seem to have done it (almost) correctly a short time ago. However, instead of the blue field with the quote inside, I got the word "Quote," which you've edited. Can you tell me what I did (or didn't do) to have caused that?

Nope, not a clue. I have noticed quite a few posts lately with the missing [ before the /Quote that ends the quote. I figured sloppy deletes.

So when you click on the little globe with the link, under the smily face and to the right of the font selections, you don't get a dialog box?

    Re: Creating a link

I did it as per your first paragraph and pasted it directly in. I'll try the globe and chain method tomorrow. Many thanks.

[QUOTE] is a different button- could it have been from that? It's a yellow square with lines on it that is supposed to look like a speech bubble.
