    Smile "The" study or Study

Today I did a grammer examination.
    Here is the grammer examination.

    Q. _________ began in ancient Greece thousands of years ago.

The answer of the balnk is "The study of mathematics".
But I've thought "Study of mathematics" is right, too.

    Could you explain this, please?

    Thank you

It's better with the article because it refers to the creation of the subject, though it's not an error without it.
