***** A NON-TEACHER's OPINION *****

(1) Your question looks like a lot of fun. May I try?

(2) You want your sentences divided into subject and predicate.

Well, as I understand it, if you know the subject, then everything else

is automatically the so-called predicate.

(3) Let's start, shall we?

(a) Where does the hare live in winter?

(i) When you have a question, the "secret" is to put it in "regular"

order when you analyze it:

The hare does live where in winter?

"The hare" is the subject. Therefore, all the other words is the predicate.

(b) She said, "You don't become sad."

(i) "She" is the subject. Therefore, ...

(ii) I think that many native speakers would say:

She said, "Don't be sad." / "Don't you be sad."

(c) "Shane" is the subject. Therefore, ...

(d) "God" is the subject. Therefore, ...

(4) Wow! It seems that you and I have the same answers for three of the

four examples.

(5) Hopefully, a teacher will soon tell us whether we are right or wrong.

Respectfully yours,

James

P.S. I agree that the sentence with quotation marks is confusing.

She = subject.

said, "You don't become sad." = predicate.

Now if you want to, you may divide the predicate into two parts:

said = verb

You don't become sad = object.

Now we can divide the object into two parts!!!

You = subject.

do not become sad. = predicate.
