    Default fifty-fifty

    Hello,

A friend, replying to my "How are you doing", said "fifty-fifty". He assured me a teacher of his used the phrase. Do native speakers reply to 'how are you"-related questions like that?

    Thank you.

Maybe someone uses this as his/her own personal thing but I have never heard this said. Usually people say "so-so".

In AmE it is more common to say "so-so" than "fifty-fifty". Another common response to "How are you doing" is "fair to middling".

"Fair to middling" is an old English slang for middle, which was a way to say "only tolerably good", so so, or OK, but not great.
