    Welcome to the forum, lasta.

We would like to help you but your question is not clear.

Please try to explain what you mean by genres.

    Re: genre

Well there's sci-fi, romance, fantasy, biography, .... if you mean genres.

There's male, female, transsexual.... if you mean genders.

And there's kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.... if you mean genus.

    Re: genre

I have a feeling that the question may relate to the word 'genre' as used in recent Hallidayan grammar. (Systemic Functional Grammar). If so try here: Development of the Genre Concept - especially here: http://people.cs.uu.nl/leen/GenreDev....htm#Australia

Yes. But those bits of it that relate to genre are very hot topics throughout some education systems - not just at university level but even in primary school - a 7 or 8 year old there will be taught to recognize the features of the basic genres, enough to distinguish say a narration from a description.

So a student - especially one with a poor* F2F teacher - might well ask just that sort of question.

    * PS this isn't really fair. Students at GCSE level (16-ish) have to recognize 'genre' as a buzz-word, and the teachers have to teach it. During my PGCE teaching practice I had to teach 16 year olds stuff I'd learnt in the 2nd year of university.
