Please help me with the following multiple choice
1. THere was a great earthquake, but fortunately there were no .............
A hurt B victims C wounded D casualties

I chose B. victims but the answer is D. casualties

In Oxfort Advanced Learner's Compass, there is a phrase "earthquake/ accident victims".

Can you tell me which is correct?

I prefer 'casualties', but I'm not sure why...:-? (I'd say 'victims' was acceptable.)

B, C or D.
I think that 'casualties' is chosen because, even though no one might be injured, there could still be victims. A victim of an earthquake is anyone who suffers in any way, say economically or emotionally, from the earthquake. It's unlikely (but possible) that there would be no victims from a great earthquake.

I think that casualties are physically injured victims of war or a natural disaster but victim could be a victim of a robbery, a swindle or a fraud.​
