    which had been given ...

    Hi

All this account of words spoken and things done reached
Miss X by the village grapevine, which had been
given most of it by Sydney himself.

Does it mean that what she heard was mostly said by Sydney himself. So he said about the words spoken and things done and then most of what he said was heard by Miss X?

Maybe looking at it this way could help:

"Most of this account of all that had been said and done had come from Sydney's very lips,
but only reached Miss X through the village grapevine."

Well, I just take it to mean that anyhting that lady heard about was told by Sydney himself. Most of it was told by him. So he said many things about what had been said and what had been done.
    That's how I understand it.

Yes, but she did not hear it directly from Sydney.

    Disambiguation:

"Most of this account of all that had been said and done had come from Sydney's very lips, but only reached Miss X through the village grapevine."

    In other words:
"What Miss. X was told, was mostly based on Sydney’s own words."
