NOT A TEACHER

DEAR FELLOW MEMBER INTEZAR.KHAN:

(1) As the moderator suggested, these are personal questions that

only you can answer.

(2) Possibly you were requesting ideas on how to approach these

questions. Am I correct?

(3) Well, I have chosen four of the questions that I think are

super important. How you answer them may be the deciding

factor in whether or not you get that job. May I give you a few

thoughts?

WHY SHOULD WE HIRE YOU?

I believe that employers want to hear what you can do for the

company, NOT what the company can do for you. In your answer,

be very specific regarding how your skills can help grow the company.

(Here in the United States, people love to use the phrase "grow the

company." That is, make the company bigger -- and more prosperous.)

Tell them you really want to work for them because you feel that this

is the job (and the company) that you have long wanted. If you have

a personal interview, tell them again at the end of the interview that

you really want the job. I have heard that this is a very effective

interview technique. Most applicants forget to do this.

WHAT DOES CUSTOMER SERVICE MEAN TO YOU?

Here in the States, we have a saying: The customer is always

right. Of course, the customer is NOT always right. But it means that

a smart company will often give the customer the benefit of the doubt.

In these hard economic times, it is not wise to alienate current or

prospective customers. I think that you can impress the company by

telling them that you believe in going the extra mile. That is, doing more

than is strictly necessary. If a customer feels that a company is

genuinely interested in his/her welfare, that will result in a repeat

customer. When I go to a store and ask where a particular item is,

some clerks will grunt: "Over there." Some clerks will personally

escort me to the appropriate section. That is going the extra

mile, and that kind of employee is a key to a company's success.

TEAM PLAYER

I think that many companies do NOT want "Yes men" (people who

always agree with the boss), but neither do they want troublemakers.

Let them know that you are a person who is cooperative, thoughtful, and

has the ability to get along with other people. Let them know that once

a decision has been made, you are going to work as hard as possible to

make sure that the company achieves that goal -- even if you personally

do not agree with it. Let them know that you have one major goal: the

success of the company.

COWORKERS

I am retired, but when I was working, this is what I wanted my coworkers

to say about me (not that they necessarily did!!!):

1. He is organized.
2. He is efficient.
3. He comes to work regularly.
4. He never gossips about other workers (or the boss).
5. He goes the extra mile.
6. He offers advice to his coworkers when requested.
7. He treats everyone in the company (no matter now menial his/her
job) with the greatest respect and courtesy.
8. He is an asset to the success of this company.
9. And -- perhaps the greatest compliment that any employee can
receive -- he always conducts himself in a thoroughly professional
manner.

I wish you the best of luck in getting that job.

Respectfully yours,

James

From the forum guidelines:

This is a forum for discussing the English language. There is no need to write formally, but this is not a chatroom, so please write normal English, with punctuation, capital letters and words written in full; use you not u, I not i, great not gr8, etc. Don't worry about making mistakes, which is normal when learning a language, but do please try to make your English easy to read.
