    The organising committee is/are very confident that they will get their one million deeds by the opening of the ceremony next year.

    I think I would use 'are' because of the 'they' in the later part of the sentence. I was taught that in AmE, 'is' is the usual verb used in the above sentence.

    Am I correct?
