    Default come from / off / over

    I found this sentence in a mutiple choice exercise, and I don't know which one is the coorect:
    The fire is out but there is still smoke coming (from / off / over) the ashes.
    Can you help me please?

    "Over" is wrong. "From" or "off" would work for me. I like "off of" better than just "off."

    Really? Is that the majority choice in AmE, do you think?

    Anyhow, I'd choose "from", though "off" is also correct. Therefore the question is invalid.
