    Default What a shame!

Wnen I first saw this expression,What a shame! I thought it's blaming someone for his shameful behavior, but it turned out an expression for "a very regretful thing". What is that?

In this sense, 'a shame' is 'a pity', something you feel pity for.

A: You have such a beautiful baby! He looks very well.
B: Yes, unfortunately he gets a lot of colic. He doesn't sleep well.
A: Oh, What a shame! (What a pity; How unfortunate!)

    Here's another example:
"Nice legs! Shame about the face."
