There are a lot of monies we will get back.

    Hello,

These are the lines from Mr Bloomberg's speech (NYDaily):

The mayor predicted that a lot of the estimated $600 million stolen eventually may be returned to city coffers.

"There are a lot of monies we will get back," he said. "People that stole it didn't spend it, and we'll recover a lot of that."

Why is such an inconsistency in using the word "money"? First it is used in plural, then in singular.

    Thank you in advance.

    not a teacher

There is no such thing as "monies" meaning the plural of "money". Money is uncountable. You can not say "I have a lot of monies on my bank account."

P.S.: Please look up moneys/monies in a dictionary. He used it in the correct way. Moneys/monies means sth. like funds or financial means.
