    routine food

    Hi

Two men are sitting in a restaurant. One says to the other: The routine food here is not very exciting ...

What is it a routine food?

    Re: routine food

Your guess is as good as mine.

    The basic dishes, perhaps.

    Re: routine food

I agree with Rover, it sounds like they're referring to the standard menu items offered in generic restaurants/diners (as opposed to a restaurant that specializes in a specific type of cuisine, such as seafood or Italian). I'm reminded of a quote from the movie City Slickers - the resident cook at the dude ranch announced to the guests that the food he served was not nouvelle cuisine, it was just "hot, brown, and there's plenty of it."
