    'bring sb up short' means to cause sb to stop what they doing or saying.

    A: He was bragging, telling me yet again how he was the savior of the Berfeld's contract. I simply said, "You're a major bullshitter".

    B: Whoa, I bet that brought him up short.

    A: Like he'd hit a wall.
