    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the very likely interpretation of the verb in bold in the following sentence?

    The woman laughed, but the sound was false—there was no real amusement. My mind seemed well adapted to inferring the true meanings from tones and inflections.

    infer = assume, surmise, understand

    Yes, but more towards understanding than assuming IMO.
