    Default Trouble understanding

    1. It must be thought that a contemplative, passive New Yorker must be immune to the active spirit.

What does this mean? Does it mean that New Yorkers are always active?

    2. He would attack and ran. Why ran? Is it because of a modal in front?

I think the first means that New York is such an active, vibrant, alive, busy city that it would be difficult to live there but be a passive, quiet, contemplative person. The city does not really inspire that kind of living.

In the second, it should read "He would attack and run". I think "ran" is a typo.
