    Is this sentence correct?

    "We have been living in Moscow for the last year".
    Does this sentence sound okay? If yes, would it be possible to drop the preposition "for" (which is acceptable in informal speech, as in "We've been here three weeks") would it work in this sentence?

    Yes, and informally you could drop the preposition.
