How do you say what you do when you go down the stairs/escalator to the subway? I am looking for an expression. (Hope the question itself is correct:D)

You go down or you descend.

Is the expression still okay if the word 'subway' means "a path that goes under a road, etc. which people can use to cross to the other side"?

Yes, but I would call that an underpass.
