Re: Which Article Will It Have?

EX: I received a welcome email.

    Here's the rule:

"an" before words that begin with a vowel sound, and "a" elsewhere.

    an egg
    an igloo
    an apple
    an umbrella
    an oven

-The word "welcome" begins with a consonant, "w", so "a welcome email".
-The word "email" begins with a vowel, "e", so "an email."
-The phrase "welcome email" beigins with a consonant, "w", so "a welcome email".
-The word "universe" begins with the sound [yu:]. [y] is not a vowel sound, so "a universe", not *an universe.

    All the best,
