Default "How do you do ?" and "How are you?"

    Hello.

Okay , I am aware of the formal use of the greeting phrase "how do you do?", which should be replied with the same phrase. However, can the phrase "how do you do?" by used in the English language to be synonymous with "how are you?" ?.
    Thanks.

Not really- we say 'how are you doing?' with that sense.

I think we can also use 'how do you do' to mean 'how are you' but it is rarely used.. as tdol stated, we generally tend to say "how are you doing?' or "what's up'..

    hello there
how do you do , we use it when we meet somebody for the first time , but on subsequent meeting , it's better to say ' how are you '
so I dont think ' how do you do' is synonymous with "how are you'?

    Regard

I would only use it once, and then fairly formally. On a second occasion, you could say 'It's a pleasure to meet you again'.
