May I know which sentence is correct ?

" Keep up with time " or

" Keep up with the times "

I personally think both are OK but with different meaning.

I think the first one is probably a mistake. Keep up with the times is an admonishment to someone that he should do more to stay current, that he should pay attention to what is going on around him. Example:

  • People don't do that anymore. You're way back in the Dark Ages. Keep up with the times!

:)

You mean it doesn't sound logical to keep up with time ?

Since times refers to a particular period, it sure makes sense to say ' keep up with the times ' :)

Someone might be racing to keep up with time; their time is short. ;-)

The expression keep up with generally means to make an effort to keep something from getting too far ahead of you.

It is easy for an ESL learner to get expressions confused. I think the person or persons heard someone say keep up with the times, but when they repeated it it came out as keep up with time.

What do you think?

:)

True :) Ron, even I myself who are so particular about articulation tend to overlook the nuance a sentence sometimes :)

May I ask where in Malaysia are you from? Doesn't look like there are too many people from Malaysia or Singapore in this forum (may be wrong, because most don't give their location).
