All students have been given two marks

All students have been given two marks regardless of their answer, ----------- some parents and students in top schools remain unsatisfied.

    A) whereas
    B) in contrast
    C) nonetheless
    D) on the contrary
    E) however

Key is A, but there is not comparing of two facts, we don't know if others are satisfied or not. What do you say?

Only C and E could be correct.

C and E both work. A does not. I agree with Rover - a semicolon is required.

I don't understand what "two marks" signifies. Is that good or bad?

Unless it's talking about the former German currency.

Is it worth worrying about? The composer of that test has no real idea of English anyway.
