I am reading "Functional English Gramma" by Graham Lock for a class. There are example sentences in the book with [inv.] at the end of the sentence. I can't figure out what [inv.] means. Can someone please help me? Thank you.
One approach of describing a language sees grammar as a set of rules (formal grammar). A grammarian interested in this approach will often use for analysis sentences that has been made up - as opposed to sentences derived from authentic contexts - to illustrate the rules.
