    Wink A question about 'other'

Today my student showed me a question, but I doubt the answer. Anybody can help me with it? Here is the question:

Nobody likes him because he always thinks more of himself than ________.
    A. other B. the other C. others D. the others

The answer is C, but I think it should be D

If it is possible, would you please explain the reason?

    Thanks very much

    Re: A question about 'other'

It's C, or 'of others' With 'the' we would be talking about just a specified group of people.

This type of question normally gets answered more quickly in the 'Ask a Teacher' sub-forum.

    Re: A question about 'other'

I have moved it to Ask a Teacher

It could be D with more context that makes it clear which others, but without that, C is the best answer (or of others) as it's talking in general.

How about "Nobody likes him", is it a signaI of D, "nobody" refers to the persons whom they both know.

It could be, but we would need more context a,s in: Nobody in his class likes him because, in group activities, he always thinks more of himself than ________. Even then, C is still possible.

Given only the sentence we have, C is the answer

But how to choose, in what situation we need 'the'? How to identify it?

    Re: A question about 'other'

Can you give me the names or describe which people he thinks more of than himself? If you can, use the article, and with more context, it would be possible. But with the sentence alone, it's impossible to say exactly who they are.
