    This is pretty strange.

    "This is pretty strange." What does it mean : "a bit" or "very" strange ?

    I think you'll find quite a lot of discussion on this if you search "similar threads". However, simply, in BrE, "pretty" means "quite". More than "a bit", less than "very".
