    Reference point means the same as reference?in "I can recommend the book x as an excellent reference point"

    Reference point does not mean the same thing as reference.

    Reference means: use of a source of information in order to ascertain something

    I can recommend The New York Times Guide to Style and Usage as an excellent reference book for the English language.

    Reference point means: A prominent, easily located point in the terrain.

    Let's use the Empire State Building as our reference point and meet there at 6:00 pm.
