    legal involvement

Would you please explain the following in red more easily?

If you choose to establish a performance plan for a Cynic, prepare specific, written metrics to facilitate improvement. Be ready for a battle over these, even to the point of legal involvement. The "uncloaked" Cynic might also launch a campaign against you among coworkers.

    Thank you.

    Re: legal involvement

I suspect it's not that you might have to use the legal system to get him to do what you want, but that HE will invoke the legal system and try to fight you by threatening to sue or actually suing you.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
