Default I like Chinese food more/better than French food.

    1) I like Chinese food more than French food

    2) I like Chine food better than French food.

My grammar book says 1) is a wrong sentence, but I really don't know the differences.

Why is the first sentence not acceptable?

    They are both fine IMO.
