    portion

"He will my shield and portion be."
This is a line from Amazing Grace.
Does that mean the Lord is part of
myself (my portion)? Isn't the Lord
everything to me, not just a part?
    Maybe my understanding is incorrect.
What does this 'my portion' mean?
    Thank you.

Some dictionaries have a third definition of fate or destiny which might be how they're using it here.
