How to describe italicized letters in handwriting

    Dear all,

In handwriting, how do you show the words you want to type in italics?

I read a books titled The Biggest Earthquake.
I read a book titlled "The Biggest Earthquake".

I think Paul McCartney is the most successful songwiter in history.
I think Paul McCartney is "the" most successful songwiter in history.
I think Paul McCartney is the most successful songwriter in history

I know you put the words in quatations or underline them. Which do you recommend to English learners? Or is there a better way?

    Thank you!

In handwriting, I would use inverted commas (quotation marks) for the book title and underline the in your second example.

You can italicise words simply to make them stand out from the rest of the sentence, for emphasis, to show that you're using a title, sometimes I believe to show references.
