    only so much

    Please verify if my understanding is correct on the following in red.

    Clara and Paul Jobs took their promise to send their son to college seriously and they had socked some money away over the years. But they had never made much to begin with, and there was only so much they could save. Their son didn't see the situation the same way.

    Is this saying "they had never made a lot of money from the start, and they could only save money little by little"?

    I think you're close, but perhaps my rephrasing below might help you understand the passage better:

    "since they never made a lot of money anyway, their ability to save was limited"
