    Default say in other words

    Could you paraphrase the following:

"I realized he was the only man in the world I could relate to."

    NOT A TEACHER

    (1) I do not know whether this is the answer that you are looking for, but I offer it for

    your consideration.

    (2) A headline in my morning newspaper:

    DEAF VIEWERS CAN RELATE

Then the deck (smaller headline) says:

"Switched at Birth" [a TV program] on ABC Family [a TV cable network] includes several characters who can't hear.

Then in the article, a 17-year-old deaf girl says:

" [ 'Switched at Birth'] allows us to be involved. We can relate. We're finally

seeing people like us. And it's showing the world that deaf people are cool. We

    rock."

Los Angeles Times, January 14, 2012.

P.S. Thus, maybe your sentence means something like:

I realized that he was the only man in the world who was like me.

    *** NOT A TEACHER ***

How about, "I realized he was the only man in the world I could identify with."? (...with whom I could identify.)
