I have a lot of questions but I'm really trying to understand it guys :)

When someone taking the podium it means he started to talk to the people?

"On the appointed evening, Obama took the podium in a cavernous ballroom at a Walt Disney World hotel"

Yes, that's correct. Obama went up to the podium and delivered his speech.

[not a teacher]

It might be clear from this definition that "took" implies that he steped up on to the dais, or up to the lectern, but does it mean that he started speaking?

Hi, first I had those phrases that talked about a public reaction, but later on Gibbs returning to it and saying "whether that would connect" , what did he meant?

“What do you have in mind?” Gibbs asked his boss.
“I’ve got some stuff I’d like to try out,” Obama said. “I want
to see what the reaction is.”

Here what Gibbs said later ...

“If you wanted to know whether that would connect,”
Gibbs replied, “I think you got your answer.”
