# Thread: Questions about statements (2)

1. ## Questions about statements (2)

Hi teachers,
Could you help me with these questions?
Information to consider:
The exercise is just for listening. The students don't have the answers. I just give them the question in order to find the answers while they listen to the story.

a) According to this statement, 'Soon he found the river.'
Is the following question correct? How quickly did he find the river?

b) According to this statement, 'It was not very big'.
Is the following question correct? How big was the river?

c) According to this statement, 'It ran quickly'.
Is the following question correct? How fast did the river run?

Thanks in advance

They're fine. The only one I would find a little odd is the first. If they're at a fairly basic level (which seems to be the case from the questions), I don't know if they'll get "soon" as the answer to "How quickly ...?" If the statement were "He found the river very quickly", I think the question would fit better. However, your choice of question is OK - I just wonder how many elementary level learners will get it right.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
They are almost finishing the basic level. So they've been learning English for a little bit more than a year, 2 hours per week. They will get 'soon' for sure as well as the question.
If the statement were "He found the river very quickly", I think the question would fit better. You're absolutely right. Unfortunately I can't change it. The statement is from a book.

Best,
