"James's counselor recommended that he should take a foreign language in his freshman year

instead of waiting until the following year."


One of my grammar books says we can't omit 'should' in the above sentence, because of the verb 'recommend'.

But I've learned that 'should' is normally omitted in the 'that-clause' used as a object of verbs like 'suggest, recommend, command, demand, insist, request etc...'


Which is correct?

I would omit "should."

It's OK with or without "should" IMO.

We tend to use 'should' in BrE, but it's fine without.
