In IPA 'yet' is /jet/ and 'j' in is a consonant.
The letter 'y' represents a glide, or semi-vowel, in 'yet.

IPA /j/ is different from the grapheme <j> in English. IPA /j/ = English <y>

    < > = grapheme
    / / = phoneme
    [ ] = phone
