Default to put comment into hustling

Can anyone help me with the highlighted part of the following sentence, please.

He put his comment into hustling faster than he should along the Van Wyck. The Long Island Expressway was moving freely west to the tunnel.

    Thank you.

More context is needed, but it seems to be saying that instead of saying anything (commenting), he instead drove fast (hustling) on the highway.
