The Geriatric Monitoring Unit, which was started in October 2010i is a five-bed ward.

Would it be better if 'which started' is used in place of the words in bold?

I'd say '...which started in October' or '...which was opened/established in October'.

I wouldn't use "started", I would use "opened". I have no preference for "which opened" or "which was opened". Effectively, they mean the same thing.
