Default such horrors as a plate of mixed vegetables

Going camping? How about taking along some scary, or not so scary, stories to tell around the campfire? Alvin Schwarz’s collections of Scary Talesto Tell in the Dark are sure to make your spine tingle and your teeth chatter. For something a little less horrible, try Velcome: a Very Scary Book, by KevinO’Malley, which includes such horrors as a plate of mixed vegetables!

What is "a plate of mixed vegetables"? Why can it be called a horror?

Can any native help me out?

    Thanks

Surely children in non-English speaking places don't like to eat vegetables too!?

I think it's meant ironically. We would have to know what that story in that book actually says to work out why, but it is sadly true that, even in these days of healthy eating, some people still consider a plate of vegetables to be absolutely horrible, revolting and inedible.

I rather like that although, as a vegetarian of over 20 years, I'd have to disagree of course!
